The Yokohama Line (横浜線 Yokohama-sen) is a Japanese railway line of the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) connecting Higashi-Kanagawa Station in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture and Hachiōji Station in Hachiōji. Nicknamed the hama-sen by local people, the line serves commuters in the southwestern suburbs of Tokyo or northeastern Yokohama.

History
The line was opened by an private railway company Yokohama Railway (横浜鉄道 Yokohama Tetsudō) on 23 September 1908[1], and leased to the government in 1910. In 1917, the line was nationalized.
Taking advantages of the location close to the headquarter in Tokyo and with less busy traffic, the line was used as a test bed for regauging in 1917 to standard gauge for the entire government network, which was abandoned politically. In 1925 it was experimentally electrified in trials for electrification of the Tōkaidō Main Line.
The line was formally electrified in two phases, firstly in 1932 between Higashi-Kanagawa and Haramachida (present Machida), and then between Haramachida and Hachiōji in 1941.
Track was doubled over an extended period. The first section was doubled in 1967 between Kikuna and Shin-Yokohama, and the final section in 1988 between Aihara and Hachiōji.
Operation
Despite the line's name, only approximately one third of trains run as far as Yokohama Station. Rapid (快速 Kaisoku) trains operate every 30 minutes during the daytime.
Rolling stock
Presently 8-car 205 series EMUs are used. The second car from the Higashi-Kanagawa end has six pairs of doors on each side. Through trains to and from the Sagami Line are served by 4-car 205-500 series units.[2]
