Nikkō Line

The Nikkō Line (日光線, Nikkō-sen^?) is a railway line operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) that serves the city of Nikkō, Tochigi, Japan. The 40.5 kilometres (25.2 mi) line runs from Utsunomiya on the Utsunomiya Line (Tōhoku Main Line) to Nikkō.

The Tobu Nikkō Station and the JR Nikkō Station are both located within easy walking distance of each other in the city of Nikkō.

June 1, 1890: The line is opened by Nippon Railways under the name of "Nikkō Sen". Service operates from Utsunomiya Station to Imaichi Station.
August 11, 1890: The line is extended to its present day terminus of Nikkō.
November 11, 1906: Nippon Railways is nationalized.
September 22, 1959: Electrification of the line is completed.
February 1, 1984: Freight service on the line is suspended.
April 1, 1987: Ownership of the line is transferred to JR East. Freight service is resumed by JR Freight.
March 15, 2008: The Nikko Line is added to JR's Greater Tokyo Area. Suica card-readers are introduced to all stations.
