Nebukawa Station (根府川駅, Nebukawa-eki^?) is a station located in Odawara, Kanagawa, Japan, served by Tokaido Line operated by JR East.

History

The station opened on December 21, 1922.^[1]

The epicenter of the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923 was deep beneath Izu Ōshima Island in Sagami Bay. It devastated Tokyo, the port city of Yokohama, surrounding prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka, and caused widespread damage throughout the Kantō region.^[2] At three minutes before noon on September 1, 1923, the local train of the Tokaido Line was travelling south towards Atami. The southbound train stopped in the middle of the bridge across the Nebukawa River, and the northbound train was in the Nebukawa station. The tremors caused the train on the bridge to crash into the water below, and then the train was overwhelmed by the 35-foot tsunami wave. A mud slide to cover the train in the station, and buried 300 people who lived in the village near the station.^[3]
