Hakkōda Tunnel
From JNSwiki
The Hakkōda Tunnel (八甲田トンネル hakkōda tonneru) is a 26.445 km land based railway tunnel in Japan and will be utilized by the upcoming northern extension of the Tōhoku Shinkansen. Located between the town of Shichinohe and Aomori city, the tunnel is scheduled for operation in 2010. On its breakthrough on February 27, 2005, it was briefly the world's longest terrestrial (land-based) tunnel, but the title was lost two months later to the Lötschberg Base Tunnel. Its name is derived from its proximity to the Hakkōda mountain range.
