The East Ban'etsu Line (磐越東線 Ban'etsu-tousen?) is a rail line in Japan operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East). It runs from Iwaki Station in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture to Kōriyama Station in Kōriyama, Fukushima Prefecture. The name "Ban'etsu" refers to the Meiji-era province of Iwaki (城) and the ancient province of Echigo (後), which the East and West Lines together connect. "Tou" means "east" in Japanese. East Ban'etsu Line is nicknamed "Yūyū Abukuma Line", taken from Abukuma River.

Hisotry

This line was planned on the Railway Construction Act in 1892, and Japanese Government Railways served its first section in 1914, as "West Heigun Line". The west and east lines were connected in 1917, and JGR renamed the line as "East Ban'etsu Line" till now.

Operation

Passeners between Iwaki and Koriyama often use bus services on the Ban-etsu Expressway, along with this line, and JR East makes not frequent, expecially between Iwaki (or Ogawagō) and Ononiimachi. At Kōriyama, it runs once about one or two hours. Only local trains run in daily, about 90 minutes between two terminals. But also there is a rapid "Abukuma", runs on some of holidays.
