The Chūō Line (Rapid) (中央線快速 Chūō-sen Kaisoku) is the eastern section of the Chūō Main Line operated by the East Japan Railway Company, on which commuter services run to/from Tokyo Station.

Services
The Chūō Line (Rapid) uses the two "rapid tracks" on the four-track section between Ochanomizu Station and Mitaka Station of the Chūō Main Line, and both tracks on the remaining double track section. Since the rapid tracks do not have platforms at several stations, even slowest services of the Chūō Line (Rapid) skip such stations and are therefore called "Rapid". In addition to the basic type of "Rapid", there are some variations of the service types with fewer stops.
Rapid
This train is the most common on this route. Asagaya, Kōenji and Nishi-Ogikubo Stations are not stopped at on weekends and holidays. These trains stop at all stations from Nakano Station. The first service runs at 4:39 (Local) from Tokyo, 4:28 (Local) from Takao; the last service at 0:00 from Tokyo, 22:55 from Takao. The signature colour of the rolling stock, station signs and line diagrams is orange ■.
Chūō Special Rapid
Four services per hour. Stops at all stations from Tachikawa Station. Line color is Blue ■.

Chūō Liner/Ōme Liner
The Chūō Liner and Ōme Liner are "Liner" trains running between Tokyo - Shinjuku - Hachiōji and Takao and Tokyo - Shinjuku - Tachikawa - Ōme respectively on weekdays only. Five service a day Tokyo to and from Hachiōji/Takao. Unlike other types of rapid services that use same type of EMUs, the "Liner" services are provided by E257 series 11-car or 9-car EMU and E351 series 12-car EMU introduced from March 18 2008.

History
Most of the route of the Chūō Line (Rapid) was built by Kōbu Railway Company and acquired by the Japanese Government Railways in 1906.
EMU operation on the Chūō Main Line began in 1904. By 1930, the EMU service had reached Tokyo Station to the east and Asakawa Station (now Takao Station) to the west. In 1933, two tracks were added to the exsiting double tracks between Ochanomizu Station and Iidamachi Station (later closed) to complete the four-track line between Ochanomizu Station and Nakano Station. On these additional tracks, the EMU express service (急行電車 kyūkō densha), which skipped all stations but Yotsuya and Shinjuku on this four-track section, was introduced in this year. The express service was renamed as the rapid service in March 1961.
Initially, the operation hour of the express service was limited to morning and evening rush hours on weekdays. It was expanded to weekends on March 5, 1944. The daytime (between rush hours) operation began on November 9, 1959, but it was limited to weekdays until April 28, 1966.
Manseibashi Station, existed between Kanda and Ochanomizu, was closed in 1943. On the section east of Takao, only Nishi-Kokubunji Station (opened in 1973) and Nishi-Hachiōji Station (opened in 1939) were opened after the start of the rapid (express) service.
- August 201979 - 201 series EMU is introduced.
- March 161991 - Ohayō Liner Takao/Ōme and Home Liner Takao/Ōme begin operation.
- April 101993 - Kokubunji Station is added to Ōme Special Rapid stops. Commuter Special Rapid begins operation.
- December 11997 - Chūō Main Line local service with 115 series EMU withdraws from Shinjuku Station.
- September 121997 - Ōtsuki rail crash: the down Super Azusa No. 13 service from Shinjuku to Matsumoto (formed of sets S3+S23) collides with a 201 series local train which overruns a red signal while passing through Ōtsuki Station.
- October 52005 - Women-only cars are introduced.
- December 262006 - E233 series EMU is introduced.
